Fireworks Task Force

The Fireworks Task Force arranges the annual display on the Saturday closest to the 4th of July.  Based on members/friends donations received by December the Task Force contracts with a pyrotechnics manufacturer (Zambelli Fireworks) in January for the following summer show.  Formal contacts, shooting site information, and down payment must be provided.  A permit from Hamlin Township requires proof of insurance from the manufacturer.  A Marine Special Event Permit (application available from the sheriff’s department) is also required from the Michigan DNR.  Coordination with Grant Township Fire Dependent (Chief Ron Melchert) is usually confirmed in April.  Regular updates are also exchanged with the site property owner (John Quiring) and the pyrotechnic chief operator (Matt Bryant).  On the display date the Task Force arrives at Camp Douglas Smith to set up the spectator area for invited guests and family of Grant Township First Responders and officials who independent of HLPS usually hold a potluck bar-b-cue.  The pyrotechnic crew usually arrives about 1 p.m. and appreciates Task Force members providing “perimeter security” while they go about the chores of building firing racks and loading shells.  A member of the Task Force must be available at the conclusion of the show to document and evaluate the performance.  On the day following the show the Task Force returns to the site to check for debris and break down the spectator area.
